Description
10 July 1918 Postcard to Miss Emily Head, Three Crowns, Devizes:
‘Having such a lovely time. Just had heavy thunderstorm. Elsie’
Postmark Windsor; penny red George V stamp.
The picture is one of a series of illustrations by C. H. Twelvetrees: this is Twelvetrees No. 47, from the Alpha Publishing Company of 2 and 4 Scrutton Street, London. Charles Twelvetrees, of New York, specialised in sweet and amusing paintings of chubby-cheeked babies and toddlers, with humorous captions. This was a particularly poignant selection, perhaps pointed as well, being sent at the height of the final struggles of the Great War.
The Three Crowns Inn, Maryport Street, Devizes, thrives today: it was an important hub, in the centre of Devizes, for carriers to surrounding villages. J. & W. Phipp were listed as the proprietors in Gillman’s Devizes Public Register and Business Directory for the Year of Our Lord 1916.
