17 May 1938: Eric Arthur Cooper (‘this man has no parents and no friends’) of Portland Road, living on a dole of 17s a week, was placed on probation for 12 months after admitting to the theft of a money order for £2 8s 5d and a box of 100 cigarettes, being the weekly pay of a fellow-lodger, Eric Andrews, from a London tobacco firm.
