Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club. Dull, heavy clouds were hanging in the sky, and there was but little wind at the commencement of the fourth regatta of the season, held by the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club on Saturday, off Southern Beach. However, although the start in the various events of the programme was rather slow, yet as the day grew older the bright sun peeped between the murky veil and the wind blew in a capital breeze from the south-west, gladdening the hearts of the large number of sportsmen gathered to view the races at the club’s signal station on the beach, and sending the boats along merrily. … The second race was open to yachts of 2½-rating, twice over the course in the former race. The starters were:- Gareth, Mr A. Henderson; Manx Cat, Lieut. H. Gartside-Tipping, R.N.; Mencen, Mr A. H. Jackson; Mystery, Hon. H. L. Mulholland, M.P.; Ferida,Viscounts Bury and Valletort. Ferida is a new boat, only having been launched from Messrs Camper & Nicholson’s yard at Gosport the previous day. She is a bulb-keeled boat, is built of mahogany, and looks a “goer”. She led at the start, but was overhauled by Gareth, who had a new mainsail and sailed wonderfully well. Mystery was third boat on the first round, but Mencen overtook her on the second. Manx Cat gave up at the end of the first round when well astern. Times: First round – Gareth, 1h. 58m. 21s.; Ferida, 2h. 2m. 4s.; Mencen, 2h, 4m. 47s.; Mystery, 2h. 4m. 19s.; Manx Cat, 2h. 10m. 21s.
